Rigathi Gachagua Launches New Political Party Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has stepped back into the political spotlight with the official launch of his newly established Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), a move expected to shake up Kenya’s political dynamics ahead of the next general election.

Unveiled at the party’s headquarters in Lavington, Nairobi, on Thursday, the DCP marks a new chapter in Gachagua’s political journey.

Speaking at the event, Gachagua said the formation of the party was the result of six months of in-depth consultation with citizens, held during his time away from public office.

“Kenyans have boldly told us they have a solution to the problems facing them. Kenyans have asked us to start a party which will form a government by the people for the people,” he said.

Positioning DCP as a grassroots-driven movement, Gachagua emphasized that the party would not endorse any specific political candidates but would instead prioritize listening to the public. The party’s slogan, “Skiza Wakenya,” Swahili for “Listen to Kenyans,” captures this focus on public engagement.

With inclusivity as a key principle, DCP’s leadership team includes representatives from a wide cross-section of Kenyan society, including young people from the Gen Z generation. The party’s symbol, a hand cupping an ear, symbolizes its commitment to listening to citizens, while the party’s colors, green, red, white, and black, reflect the Kenyan flag and national unity.

Several prominent figures have taken up leadership roles within the party.

Cleophas Malala was named Interim Deputy Party Leader, while David Mingati was appointed Chairperson. Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi will serve as National Organizing Secretary.

Cate Waruguru, former Laikipia Woman Representative, will lead as the National Women’s Leader, with former Limuru MP Peter Mwathi named Deputy Party Chair for Strategy.

Other notable appointees include Hesbon Obanga as Secretary General, Hannah Mutua as Treasurer, and Andrew Kiplimo Muge as Director of Elections.

Veteran politician Maina Kamanda has been appointed Chairperson of the Council of Eminent Persons. Alex Khamasi will act as National Coordinator for Counties, Mercy Gakuya will serve as Secretary for Education, Hussein Athmani will handle the Tourism docket, and John Maraga has been tasked with representing persons with disabilities (PWDs).

Gachagua also announced that the official national launch of the party is scheduled for June 4, after which he will begin a two-year countrywide tour.

The aim, he said, is to connect directly with Kenyans and gain grassroots support.

He urged political aspirants across the country to begin registering with the party, assuring them that DCP stands for transparency, equity, and responsiveness to the people’s needs.
