A dark cloud has fallen over Nigeria’s sports community after a devastating bus crash claimed the lives of 21 people, including athletes and officials from Kano State. The team had just wrapped up their participation in the National Sports Festival held in Ogun State and were heading home when the tragic accident occurred.
According to reports, the crash happened early in the morning on Saturday, May 31, near the Daka Tsalle Bridge. The bus was carrying 35 passengers, mostly made up of athletes and officials. Things took a tragic turn when the bus hit a pothole, lost control, rolled over several times, and plunged off the bridge.

Among those who died was Galadima Ibrahim, a respected figure and spokesperson for the Kano State Sports Council. His death has left the sports community in deep shock.
In response to the tragedy, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has declared Monday, June 2, a public holiday in Kano State. He urged the people to take the day to mourn, reflect, and pray for the victims and their families.
“He directed that Monday be declared a public holiday for the good people of Kano to pray and sympathize with the families of the victims,” Yusuf said.
Muslim leaders across the state were also asked to include special prayers during their services, asking for peace for the departed and strength for the grieving families.
This accident has left many young Nigerians heartbroken. These were people full of energy, returning home after proudly representing their state in sports. May their souls rest in peace, and may their families find comfort in this difficult time.
