US Immigration and Border Agents to Be Deployed at Club World Cup Games

United States immigration and border officials will be present at venues during the FIFA Club World Cup, which kicks off this weekend. According to NBC Miami, both US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers will be stationed at matches, including the opening game between Inter Miami, featuring Lionel Messi, and Egypt’s Al Ahly.

The report referenced a social media post from CBP, which has since been deleted, stating, “Let the games begin! The first FIFA Club World Cup games start on June 14th in Miami. CBP will be suited and booted and ready to provide security for the first round of games.” While the post confirmed CBP’s involvement, there was no detailed explanation of the specific roles the agents will play or the number of personnel to be deployed.

This development follows recent ICE operations in Los Angeles, which have sparked public protests in response to heightened immigration enforcement actions under former President Donald Trump’s policies. While the ICE presence at a major international sporting event has raised eyebrows, the NBC report offered no additional clarity on their duties during the games.

When asked about the issue, FIFA President Gianni Infantino assured the public that security remains a top priority. Speaking at a press event in Miami, Infantino said, “No, I don’t have any concerns about anything in the sense that we are very attentive to any security question. Of course, the most important for us is to guarantee security for all the fans who come to the games.”

He emphasized that the goal is for all attendees to enjoy the matches safely, adding that both FIFA and local authorities are working closely to ensure a smooth and secure experience for everyone attending the tournament.
