Swaleh Sonko Apologizes and Leaves Nairobi After Attempting to Stop Anti-Lagat Protests

Swaleh Sonko, a man who tried to stop the protests demanding the resignation of Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat over the death of Albert Ojwang, has now apologized to the public and fled Nairobi due to overwhelming backlash.
Kenyans quickly turned their attention to Swaleh’s social media pages after videos of him attempting to interfere with the demonstrations went viral. Many accused him of siding with the authorities and betraying the protest movement. In response, Swaleh posted an apology online, saying he is a content creator and meant no harm.
“Kenyans have chased me away with insults. I acknowledge my mistake. I’m just a content creator. Some people are misusing what I say online. I’m begging for forgiveness,” Swaleh said in a video. He revealed that he had to leave Nairobi for his safety and had traveled to Homa Bay. He added that he was resting at the Raila Odinga Stadium before heading home.
“I want peace with Gen Zs,” he continued, kneeling on camera. “If I wronged anyone, I sincerely ask for forgiveness. I’ve even taken off my hat.”
Despite his apology, many Kenyans online were unconvinced. Some accused him of being linked to goons who disrupted the protests and caused chaos. Others speculated that he had worked to derail the demonstrations. While a few sympathized with him, many demanded more from him before accepting his apology.
Comments ranged from sharp criticism to conditional forgiveness.
@WanjikuStephens, said, “He can only be forgiven if he brings those 200 boys to protest with us on the 25th.”
@Brian.Karanja.12, was more supportive, writing, “We are with you till the end.”
This incident comes just days after suspected goons interrupted the peaceful protests. Some were recorded chanting slogans in support of President William Ruto and calling for his extended rule, raising concerns about organized interference.
