George Ruto’s “Mood” Matatu Shuts Down Nairobi CBD with Epic Launch Party

Thousands of excited fans braved heavy rain to celebrate the official launch of George Ruto’s new PSV, Mood, which hit the streets of Nairobi on Friday, 18 July. The long-anticipated unveiling took place at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), where revelers turned up in droves, transforming the heart of the city into a spectacle of energy, music, and matatu culture.

What Happened at the Mood Matatu Launch?

The event kicked off with a prayer ceremony. A preacher blessed the vehicle, sprinkling anointed water on its seats and praying over the keys. From around 6 p.m., thousands of young people flooded KICC for the free-entry event, eager to witness the launch firsthand. George Ruto spared no effort, hiring top DJs and a hype man to fuel the party atmosphere.

Despite the rain, the crowd remained unshaken. Matatu lovers danced, cheered, and celebrated through the night. After the main launch performances, the Mood matatu cruised toward the CBD, flanked by a convoy that included George’s other iconic rides, Money Fest and Matrix. Traffic stood still as enthusiastic youths followed the matatu for its grand debut.

Why Mood Matatu Is Considered a Game-Changer?

Mood isn’t just a typical PSV. It redefines the matatu experience and design. Operating on the Embakasi route, it began service the day after the launch, Saturday, 19 July. It has just 25 bucket seats instead of the standard 34, ensuring comfort and space for dancing. With features like a DJ booth, glass holders, 65-inch TVs, and solar-powered LED lighting, it’s designed for both fun and function.

Its interior was crafted with passengers in mind, an aisle restructured to allow more space, a sound system worth nearly KSh 2 million, and a sleek finish that includes a custom license plate and uniquely designed taillights.

What Are Fans and Experts Saying About It?

Simon Onyango, a matatu enthusiast and photographer, told TUKO News, “Never have I witnessed so many people show up for a matatu launch like they did today. Mood has united all the routes. We have people from Umoja, Ongata Rongai, and everywhere in between. The way it is geared towards the passenger experience changes the way investors approach matatu fabrication.”

George Ruto’s Mood Matatu is a bold cultural statement. With its tech upgrades, passenger-first approach, and show-stopping launch, it’s a fresh symbol of how Nairobi’s urban transport continues to evolve.
