Marcos Rojo Banned from Boca Juniors After Heated Argument with Coach

Former Manchester United and Argentina defender Marcos Rojo has been banned from Boca Juniors’ dressing room and is now facing contract termination following a fallout with the club’s coaching staff. The 35-year-old, who returned to Argentina in 2020 after six and a half years at Old Trafford, may soon be on the hunt for a new club.
Why was Marcos Rojo removed from Boca Juniors?
According to ESPN Argentina, Rojo was removed from Boca Juniors after a fiery argument with head coach Miguel Ángel Russo and his staff. Defenders Cristian Lema and Marcelo Saracchi were also reportedly “thrown out” in the same move. The club’s decision is said to be final, and Rojo will be required to terminate his contract, which was originally set to run until December 2025.
Reports also claim Rojo had already expressed his intention to leave the club during the Club World Cup in the USA. His last appearance came on May 10 in a 0-0 draw against Lanús.

What happened during Marcos Rojo’s time at Manchester United?
Rojo joined Manchester United in 2014 from Sporting CP and made over 120 appearances for the Premier League side. He played under Louis van Gaal and José Mourinho, securing a Europa League, FA Cup, and League Cup title.
Despite recurring injuries, Rojo was a tenacious presence on the pitch, known for his aggressive style and discipline issues, collecting 28 yellow cards during his time at United. His final match came in December 2019 before returning to Argentina.
Reflecting on his exit from Old Trafford, Rojo said via GOAL, “One day I went to Solskjaer’s office to tell him to let me leave for another club or put me in the starting line-up. I said it was wrong that I wasn’t playing. But he told me that Maguire had to play regardless because they had paid so much money for him. He was making huge mistakes every week.”
Boca Juniors, one of South America’s most storied clubs, is currently navigating a tough season. The team hasn’t won a match in open play since April and has lost its last two fixtures. Despite its rich legacy, which includes six Copa Libertadores titles and legends like Diego Maradona and Juan Román Riquelme, the club now finds itself in urgent need of restructuring both on and off the pitch.
Rojo’s dramatic exit only adds to the club’s turmoil as they attempt to stabilize ahead of key domestic and international matches.
