President William Ruto has pledged that Kenya will deliver a memorable Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027, drawing confidence from the country’s successful co-hosting of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) with Uganda and Tanzania. Speaking at a State House luncheon honoring Harambee Stars after their spirited quarterfinal exit against Madagascar, Ruto praised the team’s resilience and highlighted the need for early preparations.

How is Kenya preparing for AFCON 2027?

Ruto emphasized that preparations must start immediately, urging the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to focus on grassroots development. “We begin the journey to AFCON 2027 today. We prepare our teams from the bottom, from every corner to every village. We have agreed on how we are going to partner with the team well going forward,” he said.

On infrastructure, the President confirmed that Nyayo Stadium will be upgraded with a full canopy before 2027. The Talanta Sports Complex, currently under construction, is expected to be completed by December 2025, while several regional stadiums are also being renovated to meet international standards.

Ruto appealed to private and corporate stakeholders to work alongside government institutions to ensure AFCON 2027 is a success. “This is not just about football; it is about uniting the nation, showcasing Kenya to the world, and leaving a legacy for future generations,” he noted.

What impact did CHAN 2024 have on Kenya’s football image?

FKF President Hussein Mohammed underscored the global reach of the Harambee Stars’ CHAN 2024 campaign, revealing: “Harambee Stars attracted over 40 million viewers on national television and more than 100 million digital impressions worldwide, including across the diaspora. This shows the potential our country has to host and deliver tournaments of the highest level.”

With strong government backing, improved facilities, and strategic partnerships, Kenya now sets its sights on making AFCON 2027 a landmark event in African football and a lasting legacy for future generations.
