The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the arrest of a father and son accused of orchestrating a Sh236,000 M-Pesa fraud at Nairobi’s Gikomba market.

According to an official statement, “The curtain has fallen on a notorious father-and-son con team that has been milking M-Pesa shops dry in Nairobi’s Gikomba market.” The suspects, identified as 49-year-old Peter Mwendwa Musyoka and his 23-year-old son, Dennis Musyoka, were tracked down and arrested at their hideout in Komarock’s Nyama Villa estate after Shauri Moyo detectives followed their digital footprints.

How Did the Gikomba M-Pesa Fraud Unfold?

Police reports show the fraud occurred on September 2, 2025, leaving an M-Pesa operator in Gikomba short of Sh236,000. Detectives later raided the suspects’ residence, where they recovered items believed to have been used in the scheme.

“At their residence, detectives recovered used and unused SIM cards, ID cards, agent and paybill numbers from Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom, as well as laptops and smartphones believed to have been used in the scheme,” the DCI confirmed.

Investigations revealed that the father was the mastermind, grooming his son into the illegal trade. “It has since been established that the father is the mastermind, introducing his son to the illicit trade and grooming him into conning unsuspecting M-Pesa operators,” the statement added.

The DCI further noted that the suspects are linked to a wider syndicate that has been targeting mobile money operators across Nairobi. Both men remain in custody and will be arraigned after processing, as detectives continue to pursue other members of the criminal ring.

This arrest highlights ongoing risks faced by mobile money agents and the growing sophistication of fraud schemes targeting Kenya’s thriving digital financial system.
