Luca Zidane Called Up to Algeria Squad for World Cup Qualifiers

Luca Zidane, the 27-year-old goalkeeper and son of French football legend Zinedine Zidane, has received his first call-up to Algeria’s national team for the final two 2026 World Cup qualifying matches.

The Granada shot-stopper made the switch from France to Algeria last month, officially committing to the North African side despite previously representing France at youth levels. Since he never broke into the senior French national team, Zidane remained eligible to represent Algeria, the country of his paternal grandparents.

Why Did Luca Zidane Choose Algeria?

Zidane’s decision connects him more deeply with his family’s roots. His father, Zinedine Zidane, was born in Marseille but his family originally came from a small village in Bejaia, about 250 kilometers east of Algiers. That heritage paved the way for Luca to make the switch, a move that has excited Algerian fans ahead of crucial qualifiers.

Currently, Algeria leads its World Cup qualifying group with 19 points. A victory against Somalia next week would secure their place at the tournament, though they would still have another chance in their final match against second-placed Uganda. Alongside their qualification campaign, Algeria has also booked a spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, which kicks off on December 21.

Luca Zidane rose through Real Madrid’s youth academy, which he joined in 2004. He eventually featured for the club’s reserve side before making his senior debut in the 2017–18 season’s final league match. That same year, he was the third-choice goalkeeper when Real Madrid secured their 13th European title.

Now at Granada in Spain’s second division, Zidane’s international career is taking a fresh turn. His selection for Algeria adds both competition and experience to the squad as they push to secure a spot at the 2026 World Cup.
