Party Culture and Events: Are Campus Students Losing Focus?

Social events have become a major part of campus life. From weekend parties to nightclubs around universities, students are spending more time on entertainment than on academics. One student admitted, “We work hard during the week, but weekends are for chilling, music, and parties.”

The trend is common in most Kenyan universities. In Eldoret, for instance, some clubs operate near student hostels, attracting hundreds of young people every weekend. The growth of social media and urban lifestyles has amplified the party culture. Post-pandemic freedom also encouraged many students to explore nightlife after long months of lockdown.

Students say parties help them relax and make friends. Others argue that social life is part of university freedom. However, parents and lecturers express concern. “Campus is meant to build a career, not destroy morals,” said a worried parent from Kakamega.

How is this affecting academics and values?

Many students find it difficult to balance study and leisure. Missed lectures, poor grades, and risky behavior are becoming more frequent. A lecturer at Moi University observed, “Some students seem more committed to weekend events than their coursework.”

A youth counselor from Eldoret noted, “Campus students are at an age of discovery, but without guidance, that freedom can lead to regret.”Sociologists also point out that peer pressure and social media influence shape how students behave. They recommend mentorship programs and stronger engagement between students and faculty. Campus life is meant to shape the future, yet many students are being distracted by endless parties and social events. The challenge now lies in helping them find balance, enjoying student life without losing focus on the purpose that brought them to university.
