What Happened to Raila Odinga in India?

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has died at the age of 80 while receiving treatment at a hospital in India. His passing was confirmed on Wednesday, ending days of speculation surrounding his health condition.

Before the announcement, reports had circulated suggesting that Raila was in critical condition, but his family strongly denied those claims. His elder brother and Siaya Senator, Oburu Odinga, had earlier assured the public that the ODM leader was recovering well.

“I want to tell you that Raila is up and about. Just like any other human being, he was indisposed a little and is now recuperating and resting,” Oburu said, dismissing the rumors that had spread widely across the media. He clarified that Raila’s condition had been exaggerated, emphasizing, “He was not in those conditions that have been put in the press. I want to clarify that, and very soon you will see him.”

At the time, Oburu confirmed that Raila was in India to rest and recover after a brief illness. The reassurance from the family brought relief to many Kenyans who were following the updates closely.

How Leaders Reacted to Raila Odinga’s Final Days

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and media mogul SK Macharia also addressed the growing speculation before Raila’s death. Both confirmed they had spoken to him and emphasized that he was in stable condition.

“The Prime Minister is safe and healthy. I have spoken to him, and those wishing him ill are not good people. It is against African tradition to wish anybody ill,” Kindiki stated at the time.

SK Macharia echoed the same sentiment, saying, “As of this morning, I spoke to Raila from where he is, and yesterday I also rang him. Raila is very healthy, and in a few days, he will be back here with us.”

Raila Odinga’s death marks the end of a political era for one of Kenya’s most influential leaders. His passing in India closes a significant chapter in the nation’s history, as tributes begin to pour in from across the world in honor of his decades-long contribution to Kenyan politics.
