The Silence game: Inside Raila Odinga’s Final Days in India

Kenya’s longtime political icon, Raila Amolo Odinga, passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, in India at the age of 80. His death has sent shockwaves across the country, triggering mourning and reflection on his unmatched influence in shaping Kenya’s political landscape.
The former Prime Minister’s final weeks were marked by silence and speculation. After years of maintaining a consistent public presence, Raila suddenly withdrew from the spotlight following his appearance at the ODM Parliamentary Group meeting on September 22, where he discussed plans for the party’s 20th anniversary. He later attended a family celebration on October 3, congratulating his sister Akinyi Walkowa Odinga on earning her PhD and meeting with Gor Mahia executives ahead of the new football season. That same day, he left the country quietly for what his party described as “an undisclosed mission abroad.”
What Raised Concern about Raila Odinga’s Health?
As days passed without public communication, rumours about his health began circulating online. ODM officials quickly dismissed the speculation, accusing rival political camps of spreading falsehoods. On October 7, his wife Ida Odinga addressed the reports directly, saying, “Raila Odinga is fine. Someone who is not staying with him knows that Raila is sick, yet I don’t know.”
Her reassurance was echoed by Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga, who confirmed that Raila was indeed in India but was simply recuperating. “He is out and about, and he is just like any other human being who was indisposed a little,” Oburu stated. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki also weighed in, noting he had spoken to Raila and that “Mzee Raila Odinga is safe and healthy.”
What Happened in Raila Odinga’s Final Moments?
According to Indian police, Raila was on a morning walk with his sister, daughter, and personal doctor when he suddenly collapsed. “An Indian police security officer and a Kenyan security officer were also with them at the time. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital but was declared dead,” officials told AFP. A spokesperson from the Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital later confirmed he experienced breathing difficulties before collapsing.
Despite rapid CPR and medical intervention, doctors were unable to save him. His passing marks the end of a political era defined by resilience, defiance, and unwavering pursuit of democratic reform.
Raila Odinga’s journey, from political imprisonment under Daniel arap Moi to becoming a five-time presidential candidate and key national figure, cements his legacy as one of Kenya’s most influential leaders. Even in his final days, he remained a unifying voice committed to dialogue and reform. His death leaves a void that few can fill, but his spirit and vision will continue to shape Kenya’s story for generations to come.
