ODM MPs Mourn as Oscar Sudi Pays Emotional Tribute to Raila Odinga

The death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has left the nation in deep mourning, with grief spilling into every corner of Kenyan society. Raila, who passed away on Wednesday, October 15, while undergoing treatment in India, was more than a political figure, he was a symbol of resilience and democracy whose legacy has shaped generations.

In Parliament, the atmosphere turned somber as Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) legislators broke down in tears upon receiving the tragic news. Busia Woman Representative Catherine Omayo and Likoni MP Mishi Mboko were visibly emotional, captured crying uncontrollably inside the chambers as colleagues comforted them. Many lawmakers took to social media to share heartfelt tributes, describing Raila as a father figure, mentor, and guiding light in their political journeys.

Among those who paid tribute was Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, whose emotional message struck a chord nationwide. “Tumepoteza baba wetu wa taifa, lakini kwangu mimi nimepoteza baba yangu,” Sudi said, describing Raila as a “best friend,” “father,” and “African giant.” He recalled first meeting Raila in 2004 through his late son, Fidel Odinga, and described how the former Prime Minister became a personal mentor.

“Raila ni mtu mugwana sana, mtu ako na historia, mtu ako na mawaidha, mtu ako na patience,” Sudi added, his voice heavy with emotion. He revealed that he had spoken to Raila several times before his passing and praised him as a man whose patience and wisdom transformed Kenya’s democratic landscape.

Sudi announced that residents of Uasin Gishu and the Rift Valley would hold memorial gatherings in Raila’s honour. “Sisi kama wakaazi wa Uasin Gishu na Rift Valley tumekubaliana na Governor wetu wa Uasin Gishu kwamba wale waombolezaji huko Nairobi na Kisumu, pia sisi tutaomboleza hapa nyumbani,” he stated.

As the nation continues to grieve, Raila Odinga’s enduring influence and sacrifices remain etched in the hearts of millions who saw him not just as a leader, but as family.
