Kalonzo Musyoka Jets Back for Raila Odinga’s State Funeral Service

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has returned to Kenya following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, cutting short his official 10-day visit to the United Kingdom. He landed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Friday morning, October 17, to join Kenyans in mourning the late ODM leader.

What Did Kalonzo Say Upon His Return?

Speaking to journalists at JKIA, Kalonzo expressed deep sorrow over the loss of his long-time political ally. He admitted that the news of Raila’s passing was still difficult to process, saying he had not yet fully come to terms with the reality. “The reality of Raila’s death is yet to fully sink in my mind,” he said, describing the former Prime Minister as a leader whose influence and legacy were unmatched.

Upon arrival, Kalonzo was received by top Wiper Party officials, including Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti, Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr., Senate Deputy Minority Leader and Kitui Senator Enock Wambua, and Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo, among others. The leaders are expected to attend Raila’s State Funeral at Nyayo Stadium alongside other dignitaries and mourners from across the nation.

What Was Kalonzo’s UK Visit About?

Before the tragic news, Kalonzo had embarked on an official visit to the UK aimed at strengthening partnerships with the Kenyan diaspora community. He had been scheduled to address the London Political Summit and Awards at the UK Parliament, deliver a lecture at Oxford University, and hold strategic meetings at Chatham House and the Commonwealth Secretariat.

A History of Political Partnership and Rivalry

Kalonzo’s relationship with Raila Odinga has been defined by both alliance and competition. The two first worked together under the Orange Democratic Movement before parting ways in 2007, with Raila leading ODM and Kalonzo heading ODM-Kenya. They reunited in 2013 under the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) and again in 2017 through the National Super Alliance (NASA), both times contesting against former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

In the 2022 general election, Kalonzo initially hinted at an independent run but later supported Raila through the Azimio la Umoja coalition. Their shared political journey, built on moments of rivalry and partnership, defined Kenya’s opposition politics for over a decade.

Kalonzo’s early return underscores his deep respect and commitment to honoring Raila Odinga’s legacy as the nation prepares to lay the veteran leader to rest.
