Maurice Ogeta to Raila Odinga: “Thank You for Being a Dependable Father and Mentor”

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s longtime bodyguard, Maurice Ogeta, delivered a heartfelt message during the State Funeral Service at Nyayo Stadium, remembering his boss as both a leader and a father figure. Having served as Raila’s personal aide for nearly 18 years, Ogeta reflected on the deep bond that grew between them through years of dedication, loyalty, and shared experiences.
In his tribute, Ogeta described Raila as more than an employer, calling their connection a “near-son relationship.” He credited the late ODM leader for shaping his life and leadership perspective through mentorship and compassion.
“I confess I know no other human being on the African continent came close to you as the First Among Equals on the quest for a freer and more equal continent, outside Nelson Mandela,” Ogeta stated. “In the historical quest for a better Kenyan nation, your legacy was marked with personal sacrifices, powers on. Thank you for being a dependable Father and Mentor.”
His words drew emotional reactions from the thousands of mourners gathered to honor the statesman, many resonating with the picture he painted of Raila as a selfless leader who touched lives beyond politics.
How Did the Odinga Family Pay Tribute to Raila?
The State Funeral Service also featured moving tributes from family members who shared personal stories about the man behind the political legend. Raila’s widow, Mama Ida Odinga, offered a glimpse into their five-decade-long journey together.
“I first met Raila way back in the early 70s, and we got married in 1973. For that reason, I’ve lived with this man for 52 years. Many of the people in this stadium could easily be our children; no wonder you call him Baba,” she said, earning applause from the crowd.
Their daughter, Winnie Odinga, followed with a deeply emotional reflection on her father’s influence both at home and in the nation’s political landscape. “I don’t know who I’ll miss more… my dad or my superhero. I am the luckiest girl in the world because you were my dad,” she shared, her voice heavy with emotion.
The atmosphere at Nyayo Stadium was filled with respect, grief, and admiration as leaders, citizens, and foreign dignitaries paid their last respects. The four-day funeral programme will conclude with a private burial ceremony in Raila’s hometown of Bondo, Siaya County, on Sunday, marking the final farewell to a man remembered as both a national hero and a cherished family man.
