Raila Odinga: Bondo Doctor Shares Deep Fulfilment in Helping Prepare Raila Odinga’s Grave

In Bondo, the late Raila Odinga’s grave is nearly ready at his ancestral home in Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, where locals have been working with care and respect to prepare the site. Among them is Japheth Siome, a medical superintendent at Usigu Sub-County Hospital, who joined fellow residents to take part in what he described as one of the most meaningful acts of his life.
Why Did Japheth Siome Choose to Help Dig Raila Odinga’s Grave?
Siome said he felt honoured to play a role in preparing the final resting place of a man who dedicated his life to Kenya’s freedoms. “The best gift I could give to a man who devoted his life to my fundamental freedom,” he shared, speaking with emotion about the experience.
The process was not easy. Though an excavator began the work, the ground proved extremely hard, forcing Siome and others to use shovels and pickaxes to continue by hand. “It was very hard. It had to be blasted,” he said, describing the physical challenge. Despite the difficulty, the task became a symbol of devotion and unity for those involved.
Siome even shared a short video online, captioning it, “Making a permanent residence for the Enigma,” in tribute to the late leader. His post quickly drew attention and admiration, with many Kenyans moved by the sincerity of his words and the humility behind his actions.
Where Will Raila Odinga Be Buried?
Raila will rest beside other prominent members of the Odinga family in the private cemetery at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi. It is the same ground that holds his father, Kenya’s first vice president Jaramogi Oginga Odinga; his mother, Mary Odhiambo Odinga; his son, Fidel Odinga; and his brother, Fredrick Odima.
The emotional atmosphere in Bondo continues to grow as mourners gather daily for candlelight vigils. Even journalists covering the preparations have joined in paying their respects. On October 17, Citizen TV’s Sam Gituku briefly helped the young men digging the grave, a gesture that deeply moved onlookers.
For many in Bondo, the act of preparing Raila Odinga’s grave is more than just tradition. It’s a moment of gratitude, unity, and respect for a man who defined an era of Kenya’s struggle for justice and democracy.
