Raila Odinga: Why Gachagua Skipped Raila Odinga’s Farewell

Senator Karungo Wa Thangwa has defended Deputy Chief Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua’s decision to skip the late Raila Odinga’s public farewell events, describing it as an act of deep respect rather than defiance.

Gachagua’s absence at both the Kasarani and Nyayo memorials drew widespread attention, sparking mixed reactions among Kenyans. Many criticized him for appearing detached during a national moment of mourning, despite having earlier sent a condolence message to the Odinga family. Others viewed his no-show as political pettiness, given Raila’s influence and legacy as one of Kenya’s most respected statesmen.

Senator Karungo, however, dismissed the criticism, insisting that Gachagua’s choice was guided by dignity and consideration for the occasion. “Gachagua is not just another politician. He is one of the most consequential leaders of our time. It is precisely because of that stature that he chose not to attend the public farewell,” he said.

According to Karungo, Gachagua’s presence might have shifted the emotional tone of the memorials from unity and mourning to political speculation. “Rigathi Gachagua’s decision to skip Raila Odinga’s memorial was itself a sign of respect,” the senator explained. “By staying away, he ensured the focus remained entirely on Raila and the great farewell he received, allowing his legacy to stand on its own.”

Despite the senator’s defense, uncertainty remains over whether Gachagua will attend Raila’s burial at his ancestral home in Bondo on Sunday. Some Kenyans believe that his presence there would be a final gesture of goodwill, symbolizing respect across political divides. Others argue that his continued absence would be consistent with the dignified restraint he has chosen throughout the national mourning period.
