What Happened to IG Douglas Kanja’s Father?
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja is mourning the passing of his father, Mzee Weston Kirocho Kanja, who died at the age of 85. His death occurred on Tuesday, October 14, but news of the loss became public nearly a week later. The cause of death has not been disclosed by the family, who continue to receive condolences from across the country.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed the sad news in an emotional message shared online. DCI Director Mohamed Amin personally visited the Inspector General’s home, where he signed the condolence book on behalf of the entire DCI fraternity. The message read: “The director, together with the entire DCI fraternity, extends heartfelt condolences and stands in solidarity with the Inspector General and his family during this difficult time. We are united in mourning their loss and offer our deepest sympathies as they navigate this challenging period.”
Mzee Kirocho will be laid to rest on Thursday, October 23, at his family home in Thome Village, Matanya Sub-Location, Tigithi Location, Laikipia County. His passing came just a day before the country mourned another national figure, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who succumbed to cardiac arrest in India. The back-to-back losses cast a somber mood across Kenya, especially as Kanja joined other dignitaries in paying final respects to the ODM leader.

Mzee Weston Kirocho was the father of a large and well-respected family. He leaves behind his wives, Catherine Wanjiku and Jedidah Wanjiku, along with eleven children, Millicent Gathigia, Alice Hiuko, Grace Mumbi, Jane Wanjira, Naomi Wanjiru, Margaret Murugi, Racheal Nyaguthii, Beatrice Wakiuru, Charity Wamuyu, George Mathenge, Winfred Muthoni, and Inspector General Douglas Kanja himself.
Born to the late Kanja Irimu and Millicent Gathigia, Mzee Kirocho was a brother to the late Piety Beatrice Wakiuru, Douglas Irimu, Cecelia Hiuko, Veronica Kang’ang’i, and Major Wilson Munene. His death marks the loss of a patriarch whose influence extended through generations.
