Zawadi Nyong’o Responds to Critics After Coming Out as LGBTQ

Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o’s daughter, Zawadi Nyong’o, has spoken out after publicly coming out as a member of the LGBTQ community, responding boldly to critics who questioned her revelation.
Zawadi, a feminist and activist, shared her truth on Instagram, posting photos of her partner and daughter along with a heartfelt message expressing love and gratitude for her family. Her post, seen as a significant step toward visibility and acceptance, quickly gained attention in Kenya’s online community. Zawadi stated that she had grown tired of hiding who she truly was and that living authentically was the only way forward for her.
How Did Zawadi Nyong’o Handle the Backlash?
Following her announcement, Zawadi faced a wave of both support and criticism. While many praised her bravery for coming out publicly in a country where LGBTQ acceptance remains a challenge, others were harsh and judgmental. One social media user questioned, “Really? What is wrong with you? What good is there in your fellow woman?”
Zawadi refused to stay silent. She responded indirectly, sharing a Swahili proverb that read, “Pilipili usiyoila yakuwashia nini?” which translates to, “Why should the chili you didn’t eat burn you?” The message, paired with laughing emojis, was her witty way of saying that those unaffected by her choices had no reason to be upset.
She also thanked a friend who defended her, showing gratitude for the support she received. Zawadi made it clear that while she expected backlash, she would not allow criticism to push her back into hiding. Her message of resilience resonated widely among young Kenyans advocating for freedom and authenticity.
How Did Her Family React?
Zawadi’s brother, Peter Junior Nyong’o, was the first family member to publicly express support. Commenting on her post, he told her that he loved her and was proud of her courage. Known for his artistic and expressive nature, Junior has often embraced individuality through fashion and art, and his response reflected the family’s spirit of openness and creativity.
Meanwhile, her sister, Lupita Nyong’o, recently made headlines for a different reason, paying tribute to the late Raila Odinga, whom she referred to as “uncle.” Lupita celebrated the late statesman as a hero who deeply impacted both Kenya and Africa.
