“It Was Just a Coincidence” Ruto Explains Why He Signed 8 Bills the Day Raila Died

President William Ruto has clarified that the timing of his signing eight bills into law on the same day opposition leader Raila Odinga passed away was purely coincidental. Speaking in Laikipia County during the burial of the father of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja on Thursday, October 23, 2025, Ruto dismissed claims that his actions carried any hidden meaning, saying he was simply fulfilling his official responsibilities as Head of State.

According to Ruto, the legislative amendments had been in progress since 2024, and Parliament had completed its work long before the tragic day. The signing, he said, happened on Wednesday only because it was part of his scheduled duties.

Why Did Ruto Sign the Bills on the Same Day?

The President explained that the coincidence was being misinterpreted online by people spreading false narratives to stir tension. “Wale wanatumia mtandao kuendesha ugaidi. We must also stand up to them and protect Kenya. Na tuseme ukweli, unajua kuna watu wanatafuta kuchafua Kenya kwa mbinu zote,” he said.

Ruto further clarified that the amendments were not rushed or politically motivated. “Ohhh Rais ali sign… hii sheria ilikueko amendment ilianza 2024, amendment ilifanywa na bunge. Niliamka on Wednesday kwa sababu hiyo ndio ilikuwa kazi yangu siku hiyo. Bahati mbaya tulipoteza ndugu yetu Raila siku hiyo,” he said.

Ruto Urges Kenyans to Focus on Unity and Truth

The President reiterated that there was nothing unusual about performing his duties that day, insisting that Kenyans should not be distracted by baseless speculation. “I was on duty like any other citizen. Hakuna kitu ya kuficha. Tuwachane na porojo. Let us speak what is right na Kenya itasonga mbele,” he said.

Ruto called on citizens to focus on national unity and development instead of divisive politics. He warned against the growing trend of misinformation on social media, saying those spreading falsehoods only create unnecessary divisions.

As the country continues to mourn the late Raila Odinga, Ruto maintained that his actions were entirely administrative, with no connection to the tragic loss. He urged Kenyans to move forward in peace and truth, noting that progress depends on a united and informed nation.
