William Ruto Welcomes EPL Trophy to Kenya, Declares “Arsenal Are Back”

President William Ruto hosted the English Premier League trophy at State House, Nairobi, celebrating what he called a “special occasion” for Kenya’s passionate football community. The silverware was officially presented to him on Friday, October 24, by officials from the Football Kenya Federation.

“It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all for what is truly a special occasion – the arrival of the English Premier League Trophy, one of the most iconic trophies in global sport,” Ruto said, visibly delighted by the moment.

What Did President Ruto Say About Arsenal?

As a proud Arsenal supporter, Ruto used the event to share his excitement about the club’s recent resurgence. “Now, as many of you know, I am a proud Arsenal fan. Indeed, the last two decades have not been easy for us; we’ve had our share of heartbreaks and near-misses. But if you have been watching the Gunners lately, then you know the style – the swagger, the spirit; it’s all coming alive again. So, to our friends in the EPL and across Europe, watch out, Arsenal are back.”

The president also praised Kenya’s deep football culture, acknowledging both the nation’s fans and its celebrated players. “Football runs deep in our national story, from the dazzling brilliance of the late Joe Kadenge to Victor Wanyama, who flew our flag high in the Premier League, and McDonald Mariga, the first Kenyan to win the UEFA Champions League. These are men who inspired generations and reminded us that Kenyan talent belongs on the world stage.”

Ruto added that Kenyans’ love for football shows in how passionately they debate matches each weekend “as if we owned the clubs.” He emphasized his administration’s ongoing investment in sports academies, creative industries, and community facilities, saying, “We are investing in sports academies, community facilities, and the creative economy because we know that sport is not just about competition; it’s about empowerment, unity, and national pride.”

Online, fans responded with humor and mixed feelings about Ruto’s confidence in Arsenal’s comeback. Instagram user mrbradley__ commented, “We are not winning the league.” Another fan, mtawa._, added, “Leave Gunners alone, we don’t even have a stadium in Mombasa.” Meanwhile, Garvinmingusa shared some rare agreement with the president, saying, “The only time I am with this guy on the same page.”
