Charlene Ruto’s recent visit to Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, the Odinga family home in Bondo, drew massive attention both offline and across social media. The First Daughter arrived in a high-end convoy of luxury vehicles estimated to be worth over KSh 50 million, a display that quickly ignited conversations among Kenyans.

Charlene’s trip was centered around paying her respects to the Odinga family following their recent loss. She was warmly welcomed by Mama Ida Odinga and spent time with Raila Junior, who took her on a tour of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Museum. During her visit, she laid wreaths on the graves of the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and Fidel Castro Odinga, with the Odinga family members present.

Charlene later shared details of her experience, writing, “Raila Junior showed me around the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Museum, where he is digitally enhancing the history of his family, the Luo community, and Kenya at large. We also visited the graves of his grandfather, the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, and his late son, Fidel Castro Odinga. Mama Ida Odinga warmly received me at the Opoda Farm. My prayers remain with the Odinga family as they mourn the loss of their loved one.”

What cars were in Charlene Ruto’s convoy?

Footage from Bondo showed Charlene’s exit in a sleek motorcade that reflected both security and sophistication. The convoy included a Subaru escort vehicle carrying her security team, followed by a Lexus LX 570, an Isuzu MU-X (her known personal ride), a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, a Ford Ranger pickup, and another Prado. The total value of these vehicles easily surpassed KSh 50 million, according to online estimates.

How did Kenyans react to the display?

The sight of the lavish convoy divided public opinion. Some Kenyans defended Charlene, praising her entrepreneurial spirit and hard work, while others questioned the timing of such a grand appearance amid economic hardships.

One user, Kalulujhn, commented, “When she was planting wheat and rearing bees for honey, you could not talk. Now see the fruits of hard labour.” Another, joykuny92, added, “She plants wheat, sunflowers, and keeps beehives; she deserves it. A very hardworking girl.”

However, critics voiced concerns about the optics of wealth. Amidah_mishy remarked, “Meanwhile, her dad is telling Kenyans they will have to sacrifice and live within their means.” Others pointed to taxpayers’ money, with Alusogerald writing, “Taxpayers, taxpayers, taxpayers, how many times have I called you?”

Despite the mixed reactions, Charlene’s gesture of visiting and comforting the Odinga family was widely appreciated. Her interaction with Mama Ida and Raila Junior highlighted a moment of unity beyond political boundaries, though the luxury of her convoy continues to fuel debate about image, privilege, and perception in public life.
