Wema Sepetu Faces Criticism for Praising President Samia Amid National Mourning

Why Did Wema Sepetu’s Post Spark Backlash?

Tanzanian actress Wema Sepetu is facing intense online criticism after posting a congratulatory message to President Samia Suluhu during a period of national mourning. Her message, shared on Sunday, November 9, 2025, came as the country grieved the reported deaths of several citizens during recent demonstrations.

Wema’s post expressed admiration and prayers for the President, reading: “Number Moja wetu… Allah akubarik na akupe nguvu na ujasiri… ALLAH HUMMA AMEEN YARAB. Mama Yangu Mama… Mama Samia Mama.” While intended as a show of support, many social media users found the timing inappropriate and insensitive to the ongoing grief across Tanzania.

The post immediately drew widespread reactions, including from fellow celebrities who felt her message disregarded the public mood. Kenyan actress Jacky Vike, known for her outspoken views, sharply responded: “Smh… HE WHO ALLOWS OPPRESSION SHARES THE CRIME!!!” She added a message of condolence, saying, “My condolences to the families that lost their loved ones. Poleni sana, may all the heroes who died fighting for Tanzania rest in peace.” Her statement was widely shared, resonating with many who felt the same frustration.

What Are Fans and Public Figures Saying?

Radio host Alex Mwakideu also weighed in, urging Wema to be more sensitive to her audience’s emotions. “Jamani Wema, hivi umesahau kwamba uko na ufuasi wako mkubwa tu unaoomboleza kwa sasa?” he wrote, reminding her that as a public figure, her words carry significant influence and must reflect the nation’s emotional state.

So far, Wema—who remains one of Tanzania’s most prominent actresses and a former Miss Tanzania—has not released a follow-up statement. Her description of President Samia as “Mama Yangu Mama” has been interpreted by many as a deeply personal show of loyalty, one that clashed with the grief many citizens were expressing.

The controversy underscores how closely the public monitors celebrities’ actions during sensitive times. For many Tanzanians, Wema’s post was not about admiration but about timing and tone. In moments of national tragedy, even words of praise can be seen as misplaced.
