Kenya Power Schedules Blackouts in Nandi, Kisii, and Nyeri on Monday, November 24

Kenya Power has announced that parts of Nandi, Kisii, and Nyeri counties will experience a planned power blackout on Monday, November 24, 2025. The outage is set to take place from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is aimed at facilitating essential maintenance work on the electricity network. Residents and businesses in the affected areas are advised to plan accordingly.

Which Areas Will Be Affected by the Scheduled Outage?

In Nandi County, the blackout will impact Emrok Tea Factory, Kamalel Primary School, and nearby customers. Kisii County will see disruptions in Botori Market, Gesero, Oigara, Botori Secondary School, Iyabe Hospital, Mis-esi, Sigisi, Mwata, Erina Market, Misisita, Nyachenge Market, St. Reuben’s School, and surrounding areas.

Nyeri County will experience interruptions in several locations, including Ragati Tea Factory, Gatei Tea Buying Centre, Gatei Market, Ragati Forest Station, Safaricom and Airtel Boosters, as well as adjacent customers. Additional affected areas include Kanyagia Market, Kieni Dairy, Demka Dairy, Solio Ranch, Solio Water Pump, Solio Lodge, Solio Cattle Dip, Solio Village, and surrounding customers. Kenya Power confirmed the affected timeframe for these areas: “AREA: KANYAGIA MARKET. DATE: Monday 24.11.2025 TIME: 9.00 Α.Μ. – 5.00 Ρ.Μ. Kanyagia Mkt, Kieni Dairy, Demka Dairy, Solio Ranch, Solio Water Pump, Solio Lodge, Solio Cattle Dip, Solio Village & adjacent customers.”

Why Is Kenya Experiencing Power Rationing?

This blackout comes amid ongoing energy challenges in Kenya. President William Ruto recently confirmed that the country has entered a period of daily power rationing, particularly between 5:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., to maintain grid stability. “Today in Kenya, between 5:00 pm and 10:00 pm, we have to do load shedding. We have to shut off some areas to power other areas because our energy is insufficient,” he stated.

Ruto added that Kenya requires at least Ksh1.2 trillion to increase power production to levels capable of supporting industrial growth and meeting domestic demand. Kenya Power also explained that the grid faces strain after sunset when solar power output drops and wind generation decreases. Rising demand combined with this supply drop has necessitated scheduled power rationing across the country.

Residents in Nandi, Kisii, and Nyeri counties are advised to make arrangements for the blackout and ensure that critical appliances and business operations are prepared for the temporary power disruption.
