How Did Depression Affect Justina Syokau’s Eating Habits?
Gospel artist and social media personality Justina Syokau has spoken openly about her experience with depression, explaining how emotional distress pushed her toward unhealthy eating patterns. In an interview released on Tuesday, November 2, 2025, she described moments where food felt like her only source of comfort, admitting that she could eat up to ten chapatis in a single sitting.

After stepping away from social media for eight months, she revealed that the weight of her private struggles became too heavy to conceal. “Nilikua kwa depression nilikua nakakula sana, nilikua nakula ata chapati kumi nisahau chenye imehappen,” she said. She further shared that the urge to soothe her emotions often led to overeating, including finishing a whole chicken with enough fried potatoes meant for four people.

“Ama naweza ata kula chips za watu wanne ama kuku mzima na chips mingii naskia tu naitwa na mafuta nakulanisha na nikikula naskia nimeridhika na iyo issue imeisha kumbe haijaisha na haijaenda mahali,” she added. The singer explained that although the temporary satisfaction made her feel calm, the underlying emotional burden remained.

Syokau also said this was her first experience with depression. While she tries to remain strong, she acknowledged the toll of constant online trolling, especially comments targeting her music and personal life. “I have never run into depression; social media bullying is very bad,” she stated, noting that some remarks have been deeply hurtful.

How Has Her Church Community Shaped Her Recovery Journey?
Justina has recently been in the spotlight for sharing her spiritual transformation. After joining Bishop Ben Muthee Kiengei’s JCM church a month ago, she updated her fans on her renewed sense of stability and peace. In a Facebook post on October 23, 2024, she said that after prayer and giving her life to Christ, she felt a significant positive shift, expressing that she no longer struggles with depression.

She credited Bishop Kiengei and Reverend Joy for guiding her through this chapter, referring to them as her spiritual parents. “My spiritual parents, my spiritual authority. I thank God since niombewe wokovu, depression iliisha, stress, madeni, kusota. God is working. I’m grateful, I’m in peace. God continue using you Bishop Ben,” Syokau disclosed.

Her improved mental and emotional stability has also brought joy to her home. She shared that her son is doing well and recently returned to playing sports. “In my house, we are happy, my son is doing great. Jana amecheza football shule. God is working,” she said.

Justina’s openness offers a glimpse into the often hidden challenges faced by public figures. Her story highlights the impact of online criticism, the importance of support systems, and her ongoing journey toward healing and stability.
