Ruto Honors Truphena Muthoni With Head of State Commendation for Tree Hugging

President William Ruto has awarded environmental activist Truphena Muthoni the Head of State’s Commendation following her viral 72-hour tree-hugging record. The recognition places her environmental activism at the center of Kenya’s national conservation conversation and highlights the growing role of youth-led climate action in shaping public awareness.

The award was formally announced by the President on his official X account on Monday, December 15, 2025. In his statement, Ruto confirmed that Truphena had been conferred the prestigious Head of State Commendation Medal in recognition of her contribution to environmental stewardship.

“As a mark of national honor for her exemplary service to environmental stewardship, I have conferred upon Truphena Muthoni the Head of State Commendation (HSC) Medal,” he said.

The ceremony took place on the same day at State House, Nairobi, where Truphena received the honor in person. Ruto praised her determination and resilience, describing her actions as a reflection of Kenya’s national values and commitment to sustainability. He noted that her decision to spend 72 continuous hours hugging an indigenous tree was not merely a physical challenge but a powerful symbol designed to spark meaningful conversations around climate change.

“Truphena Muthoni is an exemplary young Kenyan whose dedication and determination embody the very best of our nation’s spirit. I had the pleasure of engaging with her in my office following her remarkable and record-breaking act of spending 72 continuous hours embracing an indigenous tree, a deeply symbolic gesture aimed at raising national and global awareness on environmental conservation and climate change,” Ruto said.

Why was Truphena Muthoni recognized by President Ruto?

According to the President, Truphena’s activism aligns closely with Kenya’s broader environmental goals, particularly in the fight against deforestation and climate change. Her viral tree-hugging campaign captured public attention both locally and internationally, encouraging conversations about the importance of protecting indigenous trees and preserving natural ecosystems.

Ruto acknowledged that symbolic acts such as Truphena’s can inspire collective action, especially among young people who are increasingly vocal about environmental responsibility. What other rewards did Truphena receive after the HSC award?

He appointed her as an Ambassador of the 15 Billion Tree Planting Campaign, a flagship national initiative focused on restoring forest cover and securing Kenya’s environmental future.

“In recognition of her courage, fortitude, and laudable leadership, I have appointed her as an Ambassador of the 15 Billion Tree Planting Campaign, a signature national initiative dedicated to securing Kenya’s environmental future,” Ruto added.

The President also revealed that the Kenya Wildlife Service and the Kenya Tourism Board have jointly extended a fully sponsored holiday experience to Truphena and her team as a gesture of appreciation.

“In further appreciation of her inspiring efforts, the Kenya Wildlife Service and the Kenya Tourism Board have extended to her and her team a fully sponsored holiday experience,” Ruto added.

Further support was announced through the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, which will help fulfill Truphena’s dream of visiting Brazil. The visit is expected to expose her to global conservation initiatives and strengthen her leadership skills in environmental advocacy.

“In addition, the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry will support the realization of her dream to visit Brazil, broadening her exposure to global conservation initiatives and environmental leadership,” Ruto announced.

The recognition of Truphena Muthoni marks a significant moment for environmental activism in Kenya, reinforcing the message that innovative and peaceful climate action can influence national policy and inspire lasting change.
