DCI Probes Cyrus Jirongo Road Crash Death After Fatal Nakuru–Naivasha Collision

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has launched a formal probe into the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a fatal road crash on Saturday, December 13, 2025. The incident occurred at Karai area along the busy Nakuru–Naivasha highway and involved Jirongo’s private vehicle and a public service vehicle bus operated by Climax Company Limited.
Initial findings by investigators show that the crash was a head-on collision that happened in the early hours of the morning. According to official police records, the impact was severe enough to push Jirongo’s vehicle roughly 25 metres from the point of collision, while the PSV bus came to a halt about 50 metres away.
“The collision occurred at approximately 02:19 A.M., resulting in a head-on impact that pushed the deceased’s vehicle about 25 metres from the point of impact, while the PSV bus came to a stop approximately 50 metres away,” DCI stated.
What happened at Karai along the Nakuru–Naivasha highway?
A combined team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory was immediately dispatched to the scene. The officers conducted initial examinations, documented the crash site, and secured exhibits considered critical to the investigation.
As part of reconstructing the final moments before the accident, detectives retrieved CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station located near the crash scene. Preliminary analysis of the footage indicates that Jirongo drove into the petrol station at 2:18:40 a.m. from the Nairobi direction but did not refuel. Police say he stopped briefly at the exit at 2:19:10 a.m., then made a right turn at 2:19:19 a.m., heading back toward Nairobi. Just seconds later, at 2:19:25 a.m., the CCTV footage captured the Climax Company bus colliding with his vehicle.
Statements have also been recorded from the petrol station’s night guard and fuel attendant, both of whom witnessed movements leading up to the crash.
What steps is the DCI taking next in the investigation?
Detectives have interrogated the PSV driver, identified as Tyrus Kamau Githinji, who had earlier recorded a statement at the Naivasha Traffic Base. He was released on cash bail pending further investigations into the offence of causing death by dangerous driving and is required to report back on December 22, 2025.
Investigators are expanding the scope of the inquiry to include Jirongo’s movements earlier that night. This includes recording statements from individuals he interacted with, particularly those present during a meeting at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi.
“Further analysis of the CCTV footage is underway, and additional statements will be recorded from passengers aboard the Climax Company Ltd bus and other witnesses. Upon completion, a comprehensive police file will be compiled and forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for perusal and advice,” DCI stated.
The late former MP is scheduled to be laid to rest at his Lumakanda home on Tuesday, December 30.
