Six Killed After Matatu and Bus Collision on Nairobi Mombasa Highway

Six people lost their lives and seven others were critically injured following a deadly road accident involving a matatu and a bus along the Nairobi Mombasa highway at Katumani on Friday night. The collision occurred on one of the country’s busiest transport corridors, triggering an immediate emergency response as first responders rushed to the scene to save lives and manage the aftermath.

Emergency teams from Muumandu and Kyumbi were among the first on site, working under difficult night conditions to rescue passengers trapped in the wreckage. Authorities confirmed that six passengers died instantly due to the severity of the impact. The force of the collision left little chance for survival for those seated at the point of impact, highlighting the dangers associated with high speed travel on major highways.

Seven other victims sustained critical injuries and were rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital for specialised treatment. Medical teams at the facility worked to stabilise the injured as investigations into the crash began. The condition of the injured remained serious, with doctors closely monitoring their progress.

What Happened at Katumani on Friday Night?

According to preliminary reports, the crash occurred late at night when visibility was low. While the exact cause of the accident has not yet been confirmed, police officers at the scene began collecting evidence shortly after rescue operations concluded. Traffic along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway was temporarily disrupted as emergency crews cleared debris and removed the damaged vehicles to restore normal flow.

Motorists using the route experienced delays as authorities managed traffic and secured the area. The highway is known for heavy commercial and passenger traffic, especially at night, making accidents in the area particularly disruptive and dangerous.

What Happens After the Rescue Operations?

With rescue efforts completed, police and other relevant agencies shifted focus to investigations aimed at establishing what led to the collision. Officials extended condolences to the families of the six victims who lost their lives and wished a quick recovery to those receiving treatment in the hospital.

The tragic incident adds to ongoing concerns about road safety on major Kenyan highways, where collisions involving public service vehicles continue to claim lives despite repeated calls for caution, enforcement, and responsible driving.
