Gov’t Declares Friday Public Holiday to Honour Raila Odinga

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has declared Friday, October 17, a public holiday to honour the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga. The announcement, made through a gazette notice, follows President William Ruto’s directive for a seven-day national mourning period in memory of the veteran politician who passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, in India at the age of 80.

What Are the Plans for Raila Odinga’s State Funeral?

The National Funeral Committee confirmed that Odinga will be laid to rest on Sunday, October 19, in accordance with his family’s wishes. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki stated that the former Prime Minister will receive a full state funeral “with all the honours of a statesman.” Kindiki added that Odinga had expressed his wish to be buried within 72 hours of his death.

A Kenyan delegation was dispatched to India on Wednesday to oversee the repatriation of Odinga’s body, which is expected to arrive in Nairobi on Thursday morning. President Ruto and the Odinga family will receive the body at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport before it is taken to Lee Funeral Home and later moved to Parliament Buildings for public viewing.

How Will Kenyans Pay Their Last Respects?

The government has designated several public grieving areas nationwide, where citizens can follow the official proceedings. A state funeral service will be held on Friday at Nyayo Stadium, drawing dignitaries and global leaders. After the service, the body will rest overnight at Odinga’s Karen home before traveling to Kisumu on Saturday for public viewing at Moi Stadium. From there, it will proceed by road to Bondo for an overnight stay ahead of the Sunday burial ceremony.
