Barack Obama’s Silence on Raila Odinga’s Death Sparks Reactions among Kenyans

Former US President Barack Obama has drawn attention from Kenyans after remaining silent on the death of his distant cousin and former Kenyan Prime Minister, Raila Odinga. While the nation continues to mourn the veteran politician, Obama’s lack of a public tribute has left many questioning his silence, especially as he remains active on social media and has recently shared condolences for other global figures.
Why Has Barack Obama Not Spoken About Raila Odinga’s Death?
Raila Odinga passed away on Wednesday, October 15, at the age of 80, while receiving treatment at the Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital and Research Center in Kochi, Kerala, India. He reportedly collapsed during a morning walk and was rushed to Devamatha Hospital in Koothattukulam, where he was pronounced dead from cardiac arrest. Before his death, Raila had been recovering from a mild stroke and had reportedly experienced breathing difficulties in his final moments.
Since the announcement of his death, Kenyans online have wondered why Obama, who shares ancestral roots with the Odinga family through his late father, has not issued a public statement. Many see his silence as surprising, given the historical and personal connection between the two families. Others, however, believe he could still be processing the news privately.
What Are Kenyans Saying about Obama’s Silence?
Reactions on social media have been mixed. Some users urged Obama to honor Raila publicly, while others defended his right to grieve in silence. John Franciis wrote, “I have just discussed this with my friend here about the same. It would be honourable for Obama to do so as a statesman.” Kibe Tony added, “Some things are automatic; if he doesn’t feel the urgency, then there has never been anything.” Carolyne Anyango shared, “Barack Obama is still in shock, just like some of us still are.”
Another user, Johnson Salim, expressed confusion over Obama’s absence, saying, “It’s today evening, I just asked myself if the great guy known as Barack Obama is aware of this. I went further to ask my friend who was also still shocked of the news, I asked him if Obama had been seen anywhere, the answer is not yet. That guy should show up bwana.”
As Kenya prepares for Raila Odinga’s state funeral, many continue to watch closely to see whether Barack Obama will break his silence and pay tribute to a man whose influence shaped Kenya’s modern political history.
