Influencers React as Mutahi Kahiga Resigns from Council of Governors After Raila Remarks

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga’s resignation from his position as Vice Chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG) has stirred widespread debate online after his controversial comments about the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Social media influencers were among the first to react, with many welcoming the move and calling it a necessary step following his remarks that framed Raila’s death as “divine intervention.”

Kahiga had claimed that national resources were being disproportionately directed toward Raila Odinga’s region because of his close relationship with President William Ruto. He implied that the opposition leader’s passing had shifted Kenya’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections, describing it as part of “a higher plan to restore balance.” His words were met with outrage from Kenyans across political divides, especially during the national mourning period.

What Did Kenyans Say About Kahiga’s Resignation?

On Wednesday, October 22, Kahiga held a press conference announcing his resignation from the CoG role. He also issued a public apology to Raila’s family, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), and Kenyans, clarifying that his statements were misunderstood.

“My comments were not meant to celebrate his death. I only meant that his passing has changed the political balance and forced everyone back to the drawing board,” Kahiga said.

While some Kenyans appreciated his apology, others felt it came too late. On X (formerly Twitter), influencers shared mixed reactions.

Finestvinn: “Baba never taught us to hate. Rest easy, Mzee.”

Mushmorry: “Send me your number so that we can greet him first. He has disrespected us.”

its.emdee: “It’s such individuals in leadership that continue to push the narrative of tribalism. We shall remember!”

marga_ret926: “Apology accepted.”

Harochilumo: “The next news should be about the resignation as governor.”

What Did Karen Nyamu Say About Mutahi Kahiga?

Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu also weighed in, firmly distancing herself and the Mt Kenya region from Kahiga’s sentiments. In a statement shared on Wednesday, she denounced the remarks, saying they did not reflect the views of the region.

“The people of Mt Kenya do not align with such madness,” she wrote.

Nyamu’s post reignited debate online, with many applauding her stance while others questioned whether Kahiga’s comments revealed deeper political divisions within Kenya’s leadership.

Kahiga’s resignation marks one of the most significant political fallouts following the death of Raila Odinga. As the dust settles, many Kenyans are urging leaders to adopt a tone of unity and respect during this period of national mourning, reminding everyone that political differences should never override human decency.
