A marriage certificate in Kenya is more than a formality. It is an essential legal document that confirms your union and protects your rights as a couple. Before the ceremony, couples must visit the Registrar of Marriages and express their intention to marry by submitting a “Notice of Marriage” form. A fee is required, and a waiting period of 21 days follows to allow for any objections. Once the waiting period ends, couples complete an affidavit under the guidance of the Registrar. Applicants should provide birth certificates, passport photos and, where applicable, a divorce decree or death certificate. Non-Kenyan nationals must present valid passports and any other necessary documents.
The ceremony is booked after all paperwork and payments have been completed. According to the Registrar, the marriage must take place on the booked date. Once the ceremony is concluded, the marriage certificate is processed and issued.

To apply online, begin by opening the e-Citizen portal through the official website, eCitizen.go.ke. If you are a new user, create an account using your personal details, then log in. Navigate to the civil registration section and select the “Marriage Certificate Application” option.
Fill out the online form with the required details of both partners. Attach the necessary documents such as national identification cards or passports. Additional documents may be requested depending on the type of marriage. After completing the form, proceed to make the required payment through options like mobile money, debit or credit cards or bank transfer. Apply and wait for approval.
Applicants can track progress through the e-Citizen portal. A notification will be sent via SMS or email once the certificate is ready, along with instructions on where to collect it.
