Outside Politics: Gladys Shollei Opens Up About Love, Loss, and Starting Over
The Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly is known for her poise and leadership in Kenya’s political landscape. Yet, behind the public persona lies a woman who has experienced the highs and lows of life and love.
In a candid interview with TV47 on the segment ‘Mfahamu Kiongozi’, Shollei bared her soul, revealing intimate details about her journey through marriage, divorce, and finding love again. Her story serves as both a cautionary tale and an inspiration for young adults navigating the complexities of relationships and personal growth.
Shollei’s first marriage, spanning 25 years with her ex-husband Sam Shollei, ended in divorce in January 2020. Despite keeping their marital issues private, the divorce eventually became public knowledge, shedding light on the challenges she faced behind closed doors. From this union, Shollei is the proud mother of four children, a testament to the resilience and strength she embodies.
But during the pain of separation, Shollei found hope in the arms of an old flame. Neil Horn, a man she had dated during her university years at the University of Cape Town, reentered her life, igniting a spark that had never truly faded. Their love story, reminiscent of a fairy tale, captured the hearts of many when their pictures circulated on social media in 2020.
In a whirlwind romance, Shollei and Horn exchanged vows in both a traditional Kenyan wedding and a white wedding in Cape Town. Their journey to marital bliss was punctuated by a celebration in Kenya, where they rejoiced with relatives who couldn’t attend the overseas ceremony.
Neil Horn, Shollei’s husband, brings his expertise as a Specialist Psychiatrist to their union, serving part-time at the Chiromo Hospital Group. His support and understanding have been instrumental in Shollei’s healing and growth, showcasing the power of love to mend even the deepest wounds.
Through Shollei’s story, young adults are reminded that life is a journey filled with twists and turns, victories and defeats. Despite the pain of heartbreak and the uncertainty of starting anew, there is always hope for a brighter tomorrow.
