Kaluma Boy: 17-Year-Old TikToker Draws Thousands to Othaya with His Father’s Story

On Sunday, September 29, thousands of Kenyans traveled to Othaya, Nyeri, to stand in solidarity with 17-year-old TikTok creator Vincent Kaluma, better known as Kaluma Boy. Unlike most creators who showcase travel, comedy, or dance, Kaluma has built a following by sharing the raw, emotional journey of caring for his father, who suffered a debilitating stroke.

Kaluma’s videos began in August 2024 after his father’s sudden illness left him in a coma for three months. By December, his father was discharged, but the family’s struggle was far from over. Medical expenses, physiotherapy sessions, and the cost of essential treatments weighed heavily on the household. In one post, Kaluma wrote: “My father has been sick for one year now. He fell ill at the start of last August, went into a coma for three years, and left the hospital in December. I can say he is improving, but it still feels like he is in a hospital ward at home.”

His followers were drawn to the honesty of his content. From filming his father’s slow recovery to showing himself working long hours picking tea to cover medical bills, Kaluma revealed the exhausting reality of caregiving. His videos, often set to a song by Busy Signal, became both heartbreaking and inspiring.

How did Kenyans respond to Kaluma Boy?

On the day of support, Othaya was overwhelmed by unprecedented crowds arriving in cars, buses, and motorbikes. The village came to a standstill as people brought food, medical supplies, cash donations, and even a hospital bed, courtesy of Bishop Muthee Kiengei’s church. Kaluma’s mother, moved to tears, said: “Nimeona Mungu amejileta kwangu, amekuja bila kutumana. Nawashukuru sana, hata watoto wangu. Mungu awabariki sana.”

The event drew content creators, celebrities, church leaders, and ordinary Kenyans. It resembled a political rally, but young people firmly rejected any attempts by politicians to hijack the moment. One leader was even denied a chance to speak, told instead to give his donation and leave.

What impact did the Kaluma Boy movement create?

The spontaneous show of solidarity became more than a charity event. It highlighted the power of Gen Z mobilisation, proving how social media can spark massive, meaningful action without political or institutional backing.

Dr. Bernard Karanja remarked: “Pale Tiktok there is this boy anajiita Kaluma Boy. He’s been taking care of his sick dad who had stroke and been posting videos on tiktok. Today the whole tiktok family is headed to Othaya to support him and take donations. A very emotional story. This is exactly what social media was meant to be.”

Other leaders echoed similar sentiments. Former Chief Justice David Maraga praised the youth for their unity, saying, “If Kenyans need confirmation that the future of this country lies in the hands of the youth, they should watch this video.” Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah added, “That’s real community vibes and true Kenyans for Kenyans. But shame on the government and the Social Health Authority for abandoning families.”
